LIAM BAILEY + ST FRANCIS HOTEL DIVINE LIGHT

Liam Bailey's last release was his 2021 album Ekundayo, then Ekundayo Inversions (the dub versions) on New York label Big Crown. Hot off the press is 'Divine Light', a collaboration between Liam Bailey and St Francis Hotel, lifted from their forthcoming LP Enfant Terrible. With Liam's reggae sound growing stronger roots with every release, 'Divine Light' features dub drums that swirl through a phaser and expand with spacious delay and reverb. The keys hit on the satisfying off-beat, giving the tune a dance-worthy and head-nodding energy. Liam's vocals are soulful as ever, particularly on the poignant line 'We give love, we need love, we want love, with a little truth inside, give more truth in life'. In a press release, they explain, “Central to the sound was getting drummer Carl Benjamin (The Wailers, Lee Scratch Perry, Julian Marley) and singers Emily Holligan and Simone Daley-Richards (Michael Kiwanuka, Gabriels, Sinemin) on board. Mick Jones from the Clash also features playing guitar on album track ’Truth Is’”. Talking about the EP, Liam expands, "It started out as a dub EP and started getting bigger and bigger. It felt strange leaving it all on a hard drive. I'm trying to find myself still, and there's no harm in that. Getting things out in this record that I'm a bit scared of is going be good for me because that's going to help me understand whether I like it or not. It's sweet and soulful but we've definitely kept it gritty in parts as well. You can hear the stress of the city, you can hear the stress of current affairs, and that socialised stress we're all going through at the moment." Listen to 'Divine Light' here! -Ellie Rose-Davies
